Opposition Preview: Barry Town United

Penybont return to the DragonBet Stadium tomorrow, for our only men’s first team home fixture in October.

Top of the Cymru Premier after six games, Barry Town United have started well in this season’s expanded division. We look at what to expect from our Friday night opponents.

The man in charge

One of few men in modern times to make over 100 appearances for both Cardiff and Swansea, and a former Wales international, Andy Legg is a familiar name to Welsh football fans.

As a manager, Legg began his career with English Non-League side Hucknall Town, before returning to the Welsh domestic game for the first of two spells with Llanelli. He was the man in charge as player-manager when Llanelli inflicted a shock defeat on Scottish side Motherwell in the home leg of the first round of 09/10 Europa League qualifying.

He managed Bangor, Cardiff City’s U23 team as well as having a second spell at Llanelli, before spending four years out of the managerial hot seat. In 2025, he joined his current club, where he led Barry to a third placed finish in the Cymru Premier in his first full season in charge.

Last time out

Despite finishing the game with 10 men, Barry Town United beat Caernarfon on the road last time out.

Former Bont forward Noah Daley scored the decisive goal after 10 minutes, with the Barry rear guard putting in a spectacular display to hold on for victory.

Goalkeeper George Ratcliffe made 11 saves as Caernarfon peppered his goal with 22 shots, recording an xG of 2.95.

Owen Cuddihy saw red for a second bookable offence in the 82nd minute, making Barry’s task even more difficult, but they held on for all three points.

Our last meeting

Penybont fell to a 2-0 defeat at home the last time these sides met in April 2026.

Ieuan Owen, now of Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock, opened the scoring, before Daniel Barton grabbed a second before half time. The match was our final home league fixture in the regular season, before our victorious League Playoff campaign.

Key players

George Ratcliffe- The man whose heroics secured the three points against Caernarfon, Ratcliffe has performed well in the Barry goal throughout this season.

A ‘keeper with excellent pedigree who has excelled at various Cymru Premier clubs, Ratcliffe has been Barry’s number one over the last two seasons, having enjoyed a loan spell with the club early in his career.

He has also featured for the Nomads and Pontypridd United as well as being a former Wales youth international.

Michael George- A mainstay at Barry Town United over the last four seasons in his third spell at the club, George spent a year with Bont after his first stint with Barry, having come through the Linnets’ academy.

He has already notched a goal and two assists this season. He also averages a key pass and a dribble every match as well as 99 recoveries over the course of the season. He also wins over 50% of his ground and aerial duels proving him to be an all-round midfielder.

Elliott Dugan- A new signing at Barry Town United, Dugan joined the club over the summer. He is not new to the Cymru Premier though, having enjoyed spells with Haverfordwest and Connah’s Quay Nomads.

He has taken to life at his new home well, scoring 6 goals in 11 appearances. He scored an impressive hat-trick in Barry’s 4-1 win over Briton Ferry to cap a fantastic first month at the club where he grabbed 5 of his 6 goals.

His minutes per goal record is also impressive at Jenner Park, having scored a goal every 118 minutes.

See you tomorrow at the Dragonbet Stadium Bont fans 💙
