A chilly westerly breeze swept over the trimmed Ynys Park surface as Bont travelled to Trefelin for a Friday-night Novira Cymru Premier away day.
Trefelin got the ball rolling but Bont seized immediate control as an early powerful Tyler Walker header was cleared off the line. With Nathan Wood pacing down the left flank, Bont asserted dominion over the game, pushing Trefelin’s back against the wall from the opening stages.
Bont maintained consistent pressure for the first quarter of an hour with Trefelin struggling to get hold of the ball from a dynamic Bont side. A powerful Mael Davies volley was parried away before the first Trefelin opportunity of the half was blocked by a sliding Ethan Vaughan who denied former Blue, Kostya Georgievsky in style.
Woody and Walker linked up once again as the Bont number seven whipped in an accurate cross which found the head of Walker who powered the ball narrowly wide of the post.
The game picked up a slightly more aggressive tempo as both sides began to build a sense of frustration. Try as they might, the Bont boys couldn’t break down Trefelin’s deep, compacted back line who seemed to have little ambition besides keeping Bont out, and the two sides went into the break on level terms.
The second half kicked off with a similar tone to the first as both sides battled it out for an opener. With no evident solution, Rhys Griffiths turned to his bench where he made an attacking switch as Jon Leko took to the pitch in replacement of Ash Baker.
With Bont on the press, a powerful Walker strike from a difficult angle was parried away for a Bont corner. However, on the 70th minute mark, a squared Venables header found the lurking feet of Walker who netted his first ever Cymru Premier goal to hand Penybont the lead.
However, shortly after, Ioan Phillips replaced Walker in an effort to double Bont’s lead. Naturally, Trefelin upped the ante but it simply wasn’t good enough and they couldn’t break down the Bont brick wall at the back and so Penybont returned to the DragonBet Stadium with another valuable three points under their belt.
