Match Report: Penybont 3-1 Barry Town United

A crowd of 1332 at the DragonBet Stadium saw Penybont come from behind against Barry Town United to win 3-1 thanks to an Ethan Cann double and a Tyler Walker penalty.

The main share of the action took place in the first half, with three goals and the crossbar rattled twice. Bont went in 2-1 ahead at the break, before Cann’s second made the points comfortable.

The match began with plenty of action in both boxes. Barry Town United forced Alex Pennock into a strong save where he tipped the ball onto his crossbar.

An excellent Bont counter also saw Ethan Cann rattle the crossbar. Tyler Walker looked in prime position to convert, but slipped allowing the ball to roll to his strike partner on the left hand side of the box. He caught a powerful effort well but was only able to find the crossbar.

An already depleted Barry side; who named just four substitutes, were forced into an early change when Will Richards limped off the field.

His side took the lead minutes later though. A ball floated into the box found the head of James Lester who nodded home in a crowded penalty box.

An eventful first 20 minutes was capped by a Bont equaliser. Fantastic work down the right hand side from Mael Davies to keep the ball in allowed him to pick out a cross. He found Nathan Wood who unselfishly headed back across the box to find an unmarked Ethan Cann. He lashed a powerful volley home to pull one back.

The game quietened down somewhat before a lengthy VAR check awarded Penybont a penalty for a late foul on Tom Mehew. Tyler Walker stepped up and confidently fired the ball into the left corner, sending George Ratcliffe the wrong way.

Bont had a chance to make it three before half time with Nathan Wood arriving late into the box to meet a cross with his head from distance. He forced George Ratcliffe into an excellent save, with the Barry ‘keeper tipping the ball over his crossbar.

On 53 minutes, Ethan Cann doubled his tally for the evening after a fantastically timed run on the shoulder of the last defender. One on one with the ‘keeper he slotted the ball through the legs of Barry ‘keeper Ratcliffe.

He nearly grabbed his hattrick moments later, cutting in well from the right-hand side to try and find the far corner. Despite being unsighted, the Barry ‘keeper got down well into the corner to save and deny Canny a treble.

Owen Pritchard also had a chance to make it 4-1 on 69 minutes but put it wide from close range.

Nathan Wood went close late on with a spectacular effort after cutting in from the left hand side of the box, but he was unable to find the top corner. Bont cruised comfortably in a second half where the visitors rarely looked likely to mount a comeback.

Bont are in Welsh Cup action against Afan Lido next weekend, before a trip to Holywell in two weeks time in the Cymru Premier.
