Connah’s Quay found a late winner at the Essity Stadium through Hussein Mehasseb to inflict on Bont our first league defeat of the season.
It was an attritional first half at the Essity Stadium, but both sides did have their share of chances.
The match looked like it was heading for a stalemate, with both sides attempting to threaten but largely cancelling each other out. However, Hussein Mehasseb turned well to make space in the box and get a shot away past Alex Pennock that would ultimately prove decisive in the 87th minute.
Bont had the first big chance of the game when Nathan Wood peeled away on the left hand side of the box, finding space to get a shot off. His powerful effort was well saved by Nomads ‘keeper Chris Renshaw.
The hosts responded with a chance of their own. Callum West made a smart run down the right hand side and cut a ball back across the box. Iwan Murray’s effort forced Alex Pennock to get down to his right hand side, holding well from the shot.
The hosts also went close through striker Harry Franklin. His effort across Alex Pennock’s goal rooted the Bont keeper to the spot but thankfully his low shot from the right hand side crept wide.
Franklin was a threat throughout for the home side, especially at set pieces. He rose above Marinho Manga to attempt a powerful header. His effort was well-held by Pennock in the Bont goal.
Less than a minute later Nomads midfielder Callum West rattled the crossbar with a speculative effort from distance, in a passage that demonstrated the threat he could offer.
Nathan Wood had a pair of good chances early in the second half for Bont. His first effort was a volley, but he failed to get a good connection on the cross after good work from the Connah’s Quay defender put him off.
It then looked for all the world like Bont’s number 7 had broken the deadlock after a Danny Barrow cutback found Wood unmarked on the edge of the six yard box. However, the ball was brilliantly cleared off the line by Max Woodcock for the Nomads, who diverted the shot away for a Bont corner.
The Nomads had threatened throughout the second half, getting into good areas, but ultimately failed to create many clear cut chances. That was until substitute Hussein Mehasseb turned well in the box to get a shot away and into the bottom corner past Alex Pennock in the 87th minute.
Bont did attempt to rescue a late equaliser as Connah’s Quay sat back and preserved their lead. But, ultimately Bont were unable to fashion any clear cut chances in the dying embers of the game, and John Disney’s side held on for victory.
Bont are next in action back home at the Dragonbet Stadium on Friday when we welcome Barry Town United.
