Bont booked our place in the third round of the Welsh Cup, with two goals at the start of the second half proving the difference between the two sides, despite a late scare.
Alyas Debono gave Bont the lead on the stroke of half time, before an unfortunate own goal from the Cardiff loanee gave Lido a way back into the game.
Tyler Walker and Ryan Hill restored Bont’s lead within five minutes of the restart though, to give Bont a platform to see the game out. Liam McCreesh provided a late scare by getting one back from a corner, but Bont held out for victory.
A game of few chances in the early stages, the opening exchanges were characterised by early fouls from the home team. Cameron Keetch went into the book for a particularly robust challenge on Nathan Wood, but Bont failed to take advantage of the series of early free-kicks.
Chris Venables had a pair of headers that were arguably Bont’s best chances of the early stages. Playing in a more advanced role than the one he has occupied as of late, he showed fantastic instincts to go close twice. The second effort hit the crossbar before bouncing away to safety for Lido.
Lido had dealt well with Bont’s deliveries from crosses throughout the first half, but their rear guard was finally breached late on. On his first start for Bont, Alyas Debono rose highest at the back post to nudge a header past Euxace Dimonekene in the Lido goal, despite the keeper’s best efforts to claw it away.
Minutes later though, the home side were level through an own goal. An unfortunate bobble from an Alyas Debono backpass allowed Lido to level, having not really threatened at all throughout the first half.
Whatever Rhys Griffiths said to the Bont players at half time clearly worked, as the lead was restored within a minute of the second half starting. Chris Venables’ header looked as if it was heading goalwards, but Tyler Walker anticipated that it would likely be easily saved by the keeper. He took a touch to centre himself when the ball came down, before lashing past Dimonekene.
Ryan Hill was then on the scoresheet less than two minutes later, after unselfish work from Tom Mehew who could have attempted to find a shot from close range on his own. He found an unmarked Hill with a header back across goal, whose shot into the ground bounced over the Lido ‘keeper.
Bont had chances to make it four. Nathan Wood had an effort blocked from the right hand side of the box which looked like it was heading goalwards. Tyler Walker also forced a strong save from the busy Lido ‘keeper who tipped a powerful shot over the bar well.
Lido had barely threatened throughout the second half, but set up a nervy finish after pulling one back from a corner through the experienced Liam McCreesh.
Substitute McCreesh had the ball in the net again less than two minutes later, after finding himself unmarked at the back post. But, his header was ruled out for offside by the assistant referee.
The Round 3 draw takes place at 7pm on Monday 19th October, with Bont’s ball number yet to be confirmed.
